History

The history of Libya can be characterized in periods of time. The early history is considered to be the time of the Phoenicians, Greeks, Garamentes, and the Romans. A later stage is the spread of Islam across North Africa. Then Libya came under the influence of the Ottomans. From 1711 to 1835 the territory comprising present-day Libya had been a semi-independent province of the Ottoman Empire. From 1912 until 1947 it was an Italian colony, and was under British and French occupation from 1943 to 1951. It gained its independence in 1951.
