Terrorism in Libya saw a significant decline over the past
year. According to a report by the Institute for Economics and
Peace (IEP), Libya ranked 39th in 2024 as opposed to 7th in
2023. 1. and 2.
ISIS-Libya (ISIS-L)
ISIS Libya is one of the terrorist groups that emerged in
the aftermath of the Libyan civil wars. The group conducted
terrorist attacks in Libya and has attempted expansion into
other North African countries. It was responsible for the
kidnapping and beheading of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians in
2015. In 2016, under pressure from Libyan government forces it
lost its base in Sirte and retreated to the desert areas of
central Libya to rebuild.
