Zintani Military Council

The Zintan Military Council (ZMC) is based in Zintan, Libya, located southwest of Tripoli. It is roughly comprised of five militias from the Zintan region. Some elements of the ZMC support the Government of National Unity (GNU) based in Tripoli while other elements support the regime led by General Haftar in eastern Libya.
The influence of the ZMC extends beyond the city of Zintan. For instance, the 17th Border Guard Battalion under the command of Muhammed Abdul Nabi located in Ghadames is linked to the ZMC commander, Osama Juwaili. The city of Ghadames is a key border crossing close to the countries of Tunisia and Algiers.
Background:
Libya's descent into chaos following the ousting of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 created a power vacuum that led to the proliferation of armed groups across the country. Zintan, a city in western Libya, emerged as a key player in this milieu, with its own military council gaining prominence. The Zintan Military Council became known for its influence, particularly in the western region, and its role in shaping the post-revolutionary landscape.
Osama al-Juwaili, a Libyan military commander, rose to prominence within this context. Born and raised in Libya, al-Juwaili's military career spans decades, reflecting his deep-rooted involvement in the country's armed forces.
